Patricia Chardonnay 2022

Brown Brothers
95 points Halliday Wine Companion

Minimum order of 1 case or 6 bottles (Mixed or straight)

The fruit for this 2022 vintage was handpicked from our premium vineyards located in the Tamar Valley, whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented. This wine perfectly displays the elements of cool climate Chardonnay with a zesty citrus finesse, mineral notes, and sensational complexity earned from its time maturing in French oak. Cheers to Patricia.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Patricia Chardonnay is an elegant style balancing natural acidity with complexity and ripe stone fruit flavour. This vintage was a standout for Chardonnay especially from our Kayena vineyard in northern Tamar Valley. This wine combines the three best blocks from the 2022 vintage. The Kayena vineyard experiences cool ripening conditions, contributing to a tight style with wonderful white peach and citrus notes typical of a cool climate chardonnay. The wine shows a vibrant straw colour with a slight green hue. The nose is complex with aromas of stone fruits, cashews, citrus and pear. The palate is elegant with mineral characters, struck match complexity and incredible length. It is a crisp wine with well balanced acidity, oak, and layers of intrigue.

Food Pairings

For the summer months the 2022 Patricia Chardonnay would be perfect with lightly fried white bait with a lemon mayonnaise dipping sauce. During winter try it with lobster accompanied by a lime and coriander butter. It is also perfect with ripe brie cheese and slices of freshly cut pear.

The citrus-zingy characters of the Apple Isle-think Tahitian limes, Meyer lemons, kumquats, mandarins, and pink grapefruits-all squeezed on top of dollop cream, vanilla pods, toasted hazelnuts and grilled Brazilian nuts. The palate equally possesses all the freshness of Tamar Valley, hugged by the power of the full barrel fermentation and the added spiciness from both the whole bunches and oak—that kind of apple and cinnamon tart feeling, if you know what I mean. Extremely fine on the back of the palate, it could have tripped on the winemaking and ruinously rolled down the hill. Instead, it is composedly and graciously walking away on Louboutin high heels.

The fruit here was from Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, whole bunched pressed and barrel fermented. The wine then spent eleven months maturing in French oak, 38% new. A pale lemon hue, the nose exhibits notes of fig and stonefruit, with good oak integration. Quite an intense style with hints of riverstones, apricot kernels, crisp apples and citrus. A seamless structure, supple texture, fine acidity and good balance resulting in a wine with focus and length – serious length. This will drink beautifully for at least the next decade. A cracking Tassie Chardonnay.

The fruit was hand picked and whole bunch pressed to minimise phenolic extraction. All components completed fermentation in barrel on full solids and with natural yeast to add complexity. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation to add a further layer of interest and also to reduce the high levels of natural acidity of the 2022 vintage. The wine spent 11 months in a combination of new (38%), and seasoned French oak barriques with the lees continually stirred to ensure complexity and refinement.

“The 2022 vintage was an exceptional year for chardonnay in the Tamar Valley. Its’ not often that we are so spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the very best parcels for this wine”.
