Limited Release Gamay 2023

94 points Halliday Wine Companion

Minimum order of 1 case or 6 bottles (Mixed or straight)

The spirit of experimentation lives on through four generations of the Brown Family who are constantly trialling unique and emerging varieties including the King Valley Gamay. Planted at our Banksdale vineyard in 2011, the Gamay vines enjoy the high-altitude growing conditions to produce fresh and lively wine. The 2023 Gamay is a soft, juicy wine that reveals delightful notes of red berries, cherry and subtle pepper spice. Vibrant and textural, it is best enjoyed young. Try it chilled with Asian-inspired dishes.

Food Pairings

The Gamay style is quite versatile when it comes to food. It is light enough to try with quail wrapped in prosciutto with stir fried vegetables. Or try it with a selection of cold meats, such as salami and aged Jamon.

Jeni Port - Halliday Wine Companion 22/03/2024

Gamay is having a moment and why not when the grape looks and tastes as joyous and full of summertime flavour – and fun – as this? Brings everything together in the one place in cherry, mulberry, plum, wild herbs, pink peppercorn and florals of lifted violet and earthy rhubarb. It's bright, it's smooth-flowing, it's utterly delightful.

The wine was made utilising whole berry fermentation to enhance red berry aromas. To add a layer of complexity the Gamay was aged in older French oak. The 2023 Gamay was bottled with an alcohol of 12.5%.

Gamay Delight

"Beautifully balanced and lovely textured red wine. A smooth, light and fresh tasting wine which is a treat to drink. Upon finding Gamay, I finally started drinking red wine!"

Sharon S. (5/5)

I can drink it.

"Overwhelming impression is that the fruit tastes a bit stewed and heavy not fresh and light. I thought that this style would be more pinot-like but I don't have much experience of Gamay. Maybe what I am picking up is the character of this variety but, if so, I don't appreciate it."

Tapas & Gamay

"My purchase was based on wanting to experience the increasing trend toward lighter style wines. Our house got into the swing of things with tapas style eats and the gamay hit the mark. The wine was extreemly complimentary and lent itself to a relaxed light hearted night."

Love it

"Bursting with flavour and strong hints of fruitiness. Rather delicious with pork & beef meatballs and very easy to drink."

Coral M. (5/5)

Deliciously quaffable

"A delightful tipple that easy to drink. A lovely light red for any occasion, either with or before you tuck into some food."

"Too light for me"

Delicious!

"For those who like to drink red wine in summer this is a great option!"

Susan L. (5/5)

The label describes the wine well.

"Just like the Beaujolais Villages I enjoyed when I visited Macon in the 1970s!"

Graham P. (5/5)

Gamay

"This variety has huge potential. I think this particular release requires a little more fruit flavour to the front palate. Enjoyed the wine very much and look forward to its growth in the Australian wine market."
