The first release of this wine comes from fruit taken from the best parcel of the lauded Kayena Vineyard. Lovely aromatic depth on show from the outset. Ripe raspberry and heady ripe red florals meld with cinnamon and nutmeg spice with integrated cedar oak beneath. There’s an undercurrent of earth, forest floor and pan juice umami that emerges with a swirl of the glass, too. Excellent complexity and poise aromatically, causing excitement for what’s to come. There’s brilliant lift through the palate, with nothing cumbersome nor weighty while still wonderfully intense. Raspberry and earth glide through the mouth, with nutmeg and red rose neatly in tow before ribbons of svelte chalky tannins and a wash of earthy acidity frame it all to a long finish. Red florals permeating the mouth perfume. This is a strong inaugural release with elegance, balance and complexity in spades. For those who can wait, time in cellar will see the earth and umami notes unfurl beautifully.

A pale crimson colour for this Tassie Pinot, the wine is beautifully fragrant and a classically appealing Pinot. There are notes of raspberries, cold tea, rose petals, a touch of fennel, bay leaves, cherries and other red fruits. A silky texture, the wine is of medium length with fine balance and a nice line of acidity. Enjoy it over the next six to eight years, but I have no doubt that for those who can restrain themselves, time in the cellar will be to the wine’s advantage.

The 2022 vintage was challenging with early season rainfall. It cleared in time for harvest leading to a cooler than average vintage. The Grand Assemblage Pinot Noir is a combination of traditional wine making and newer trials like gentle pump overs and whole bunch carbonic fermentation. There is a purity of Tamar Valley Pinot Noir fruit with incredible aging potential. The 12 months in barrel allowed for full settling and no finning or filtration.
